NASCAR President Steve Phelps on Kyle Larson running Indy 500/Coca-Cola 600 double: ‘He is a generational driver’

This week Kyle Larson is going to race in the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day in the Memorial Day Double. NASCAR President Steve Phelps considers Larson a rare talent.

There is a lot said about Kyle Larson and his talent. At times, it is easy to forget how talented he is because of how competitive the Cup Series is. Even with the parity at an all-time high, Larson is consistently favored in races week in and week out.

Not to mention all of the sprint car races and dirt modifieds that he drives in his “off time.” He lives and breathes racing, plain and simple.

That’s why Steve Phelps holds him in high regard.

“He is a generational driver. He is just that good,” Phelps said on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. “You guys talked about him winning last night, right? The kid wins in everything and he’s just so nonchalant about it, he’s not arrogant, he’s just a cool kid who loves to race. So I think the double is unique, we’ve had drivers do it in the past. I would suggest, this isn’t hyperbole or me promoting the Kyle Larson deal or the Double, I think he has as good of a shot as anyone to win it, right?

“How cool would that be? He wins the Indy 500 and then turns around and wins the Coke 600? That’s just spectacular but I think he can do it. If it’s got wheels on it this kid can drive it and he can win.”

After watching Kyle Larson qualify P5 for the Indy 500 and then go to North Wilkesboro and finish P4 racing in a car he hadn’t driven yet, on a repaved track he hadn’t driven on, after hours of work in Indianapolis was more than confirmation. He is ready for the moment.

Phelps is right, too. Larson keeps a nonchalant attitude. Despite having the accolades and awards and being a champion at such a young age, he’s low-key. You never really see him get too high or too low.

Racing makes Larson happy and that’s really all he needs it seems. A fast ride that is competitive and a chance to run well. He has incredible car control, he is bold and races whatever line he can find the quickest times on. What more do you want from a star driver?

If all goes well, Kyle Larson may very well make history on Sunday. If it goes very well, he could achieve something no one thought possible – Win the Indy 500 and Coke 600 in the same day.
