Cowboys suggested to sign former All-Pro WR before season

It's been a bit of a strange offseason for the Dallas Cowboys during the last few months. They haven't really made any notable additions to their roster, and most of their significant changes have involved them moving on from some longtime contributors.

Despite their lack of moves this year, the Cowboys coaching staff and front office apparently seem comfortable with who they currently have on their roster as they prepare to return to the field for the 2024 season.

Dallas does still have plenty of needs, though, even if some of the higher-ups in the organization won't admit this to the public. Unfortunately, the Cowboys currently don't have a ton of cap space (just under $3.9 million, according to OverTheCap.com), so they'll have to look through the bargain bin if they change their mind about adding more pieces to their roster before the start of the 2024 season.

Recently, a current free agent was suggested for Dallas to consider signing, and it's a player that they might actually be able to afford.

ESPN's Matt Bowen shared a column on Monday in which he attempted to pair some of the most notable remaining free agents with an NFL team. For the Cowboys, he has them adding former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas.

Now, if we were back in 2018 or 2019, then Thomas would be an excellent addition to Dallas's receiver group. With the Saints, Thomas was a first-team All-Pro in 2018 and 2019, and in 2019 he was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year.

Since that historic season, however, he hasn't finished a year with more than 448 receiving yards, and it seems highly unlikely that he's going to perform at such a high level ever again.

Still, he's only 31 years old, and if it doesn't cost much to sign him, it might be worth it for the Cowboys to consider adding the former Saints wide receiver to their roster this offseason.

Currently, Dallas has Ceedee Lamb and Brandin Cooks at the top of its receiver depth chart. But aside from these two, the rest of the team's pass-catchers don't have a ton of experience in the NFL — and this is something that Thomas could potentially add to the position group.

With New Orleans in 2023, Thomas hauled in 39 passes for 448 yards and one touchdown over 10 appearances. If he puts up similar numbers as a No. 3 receiver next season, the Cowboys would likely be happy with that amount of production.
