Los Angeles Chargers Urged to Trade For 3,600-Yard Wide Receiver to Help Justin Herbert

The Los Angeles Chargers will likely be an offense built in head coach Jim Harbaugh’s ground-and-pound image, but, the franchise still owes it to wunderkind quarterback Justin Herbert to upgrade the talent at wide receiver.

That’s especially true after the Chargers traded veteran Keenan Allen to the Chicago Bears and allowed Mike Williams to walk via free agency, earlier this offseason.

Bengals’ Tee Higgins a Perfect Fit for Los Angeles Chargers

After Tee Higgins requested a trade from the Cincinnati Bengals, the Los Angeles Chargers could be the perfect fit.

“The Chargers drafted rookie receiver Ladd McConkey,” ESPN’s Matt Bowen writes, suggesting a Chargers trade for Higgins. “Who has the route traits to live in the middle of the field, and added veteran DJ Chark Jr. And if Higgins — who requested a trade this offseason — does get moved before the start of the 2024 season, he would immediately upgrade the Chargers’ offense as a three-level target for quarterback Justin Herbert.

“With a pass game that will be heavily schemed and include play-action elements under new coach Jim Harbaugh, the Chargers could create both isolation matchups and open voids for Higgins to produce. He has 24 career TDs over four seasons, and he totaled 656 yards last year after breaking 1,000 in back-to-back seasons. (For what it’s worth, Higgins is anticipating staying in Cincinnati.)”

Higgins would immediately vault to the top of the Chargers’ depth chart, and would be a solid veteran presence in Herbert’s receiving corps that is going through a significant transition phase.

Through his first four seasons, since being chosen by the Bengals in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Higgins has caught 257 passes for 3,684 yards with 24 touchdowns.

Trading for Higgins wouldn’t just upgrade the offense around Herbert, but also signal that the Chargers are serious about mounting a serious challenge to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West.
